This course looks at the history of social, political and economic development of Southeast Asia, excluding Indochina, and focusing primarily on Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. It will discuss the contingent and dependent nature of development of these countries under the larger framework of global capitalism, and how such development affects the national historical experiences of these countries.
