This course introduces pronunciation strategies and techniques to comprehend English speech and improve the clarity and fluency of spoken English. During the course, students develop their oral communication skills for speech talks and pair/group interactions in academic and professional settings. The course focuses on prosodic features such as phrase stress, intonation, connected speech phenomena, and rhythm as well as individual consonant and vowel sounds. The students also develop their listening comprehension of academic talks through activities that bring awareness of how speakers use prosodic and discourse markers to convey their intended meanings and highlight key information..

EAPP 0101: CRITICAL DISCUSS. OF ACADEMIC TEXTS

Credits 6
This course offers advanced-level readers intensive practice with reading and writing tasks in various writing genres involving familiar and unfamiliar topics. It provides ample opportunities to develop students’ reading speed, vocabulary-building and reading strategies, and their ability to comprehend college content reading materials in depth and independently. Purposefully selected reading tasks enhance students’ understanding of complex structures and help improve their summarizing, synthesizing, and inferencing skills. Students also engage in critical oral and written discussions of college texts, thereby also enhancing their critical thinking, argumentative, written, and oral skills.

EAPP 0102: WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Credits 3
This course provides opportunities for developing linguistic competencies essential for academic writing. It covers the processes and practice of formal audience writing. It focuses on developing a clear thesis statement, writing concisely and with grammatical accuracy, revising, editing, and adopting writing for different purposes. Key components of academic discourse, such as academic integrity, organizational strategies, and professional expectations are also included.

EAPP 0110: ADV WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Credits 3
This course focuses on developing sophisticated linguistic competencies essential for academic work across disciplines. Students will analyze and implement complex grammatical structures found in authentic academic texts, with emphasis on hedging devices, reporting verbs, back-shifting verb forms, and advanced syntactical patterns. Through intensive engagement with scholarly articles and academic writing tasks, students will enhance their ability to process and produce higher-level academic discourse in both written and spoken forms. The course integrates advanced academic vocabulary development, rhetorical strategies, and discipline-specific conventions while providing opportunities to work with research-based materials from various academic fields.

EAPP 1010: ORAL COMMUN & PUBLIC SPEAKING

Credits 6
This course provides advanced practice in public speaking required in academic and other professional settings. Students will have the opportunity to plan and deliver academic presentations, develop research and organizational skills, self-assess and peer-assess oral research and poster presentations, and improve their English oral accuracy and fluency. The course also covers performance issues in academic presentations, such as oral delivery, the use of visual aids, audience accommodation, and non-verbal behavior. Course fulfills 3 credits of Global Perspective or Core Elective requirements; additional 3 credits applied as General Elective credits.

EAPP 1011: CRITICAL INQUIRY & RESEARCH WRITING

In this course, students are introduced to critical inquiry and analysis of literary texts and the methods, techniques, and materials of argumentative research writing. The course guides students as they form research questions related to their areas of interest, develop an appropriate research strategy, review and think critically about the information gathered through various sources, and write a short research paper that reviews and cite sources appropriately. Emphasis is placed on summarizing, integrating, comparing, critiquing, and documenting academic material for a specialized audience.

Independent study for non-native speakers of English who have demonstrated a commitment to further study of English writing skills and techniques and/or English reading skills and vocabulary. The student will complete independent study in conjunction with the appropriate ESL faculty.
